Chrome DM COTT, the OTT audience measurement platform, released viewership data for the FIFA World Cup 2026 on ZEE5. Zee Entertainment secured exclusive India digital rights for the tournament — broadcast live on Unite8 Sports channels and streamed on ZEE5 — in a deal finalised on 1 Jun 2026. COTT measured viewership across two windows: the full tournament from 12 Jun to 12 Jul 2026, and the Quarter Finals from 10 Jul to 12 Jul 2026.
Across the full tournament, ZEE5 recorded 46.99 Mn unique viewers in India. Male audiences accounted for 41.45 Mn (88%) and female viewers for 5.53 Mn (12%). The Quarter Finals window alone drew 34.75 Mn unique viewers, with male viewers at 31.70 Mn (91%) and female viewers at 3.05 Mn (9%), reflecting the heightened intensity of the knockout stage.

The tournament’s defining moment came in the Round of 16, when defending champions Argentina found themselves down 0–2 with 11 minutes remaining against Egypt. Messi — who had missed a penalty and struck the post on a free-kick — then orchestrated one of the greatest comebacks in World Cup history: an assist for Romero (79′), a goal of his own (83′), and a stoppage-time winner from Enzo Fernández (90’+2) completed the 3–2 turnaround. The image of Messi breaking down in tears at the final whistle at Atlanta Stadium became the defining visual of the 2026 tournament.
In the Quarter Final at Kansas City, Argentina faced Switzerland. Mac Allister gave Argentina an early lead before Ndoye equalised. With Switzerland reduced to ten men after Embolo’s red card, Argentina pressed relentlessly before Julián Álvarez broke Swiss resistance with a golazo in extra time (112′). Lautaro Martínez sealed a 3–1 win in the 120’+1, sending Argentina into the semi-finals against England.
Viewership Summary — Full Tournament vs Quarter Finals

The male share increased from 88% in the full tournament to 91% during the Quarter Finals, indicating that male-skewed sports audiences intensify their engagement as stakes rise.

Riya Maity, Business Head of Chrome Digital, said, “The FIFA World Cup 2026 data on ZEE5 is one of the more distinctive viewership stories we’ve tracked — 46.99 Mn across the full tournament, with 34.75 Mn coming in just the Quarter Finals window alone. The state profile tells you exactly where football lives in India: West Bengal, the Northeast, and Kerala together account for nearly half the total reach. The CTV number is also worth noting — 6.16 Mn on the big screen for a live sports event is a meaningful signal for advertisers. This is an audience that was genuinely invested.”
