Listen to Kartik Sharma, CEO of Omnicom Media Group India, on MVP

Our conversation captures how Kartik navigated the intense demands of leadership, including joining the company during the black swan event of the COVID-19 pandemic, to successfully steer OMG India toward double-digit, sustainable growth, achieving rates nearly double the industry adex. I bring you the soft-spoken, unflappable Kartik Sharma who provides a rewarding, insightful, critical overview of the strategic, technological, and cultural imperatives that have seen OMG India lead its peers in transformative growth for its clients, their audiences, and its own talent.

Leadership and the Culture of Sustainable Growth

Kartik emphasizes that his foundational mandate centered on not just achieving financial growth but, critically, on fostering the right culture—one built on innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. He reflects on the resilience required to manage teams remotely for almost two years, detailing specific policies like implementing a necessary “meetings curfew” at 7 pm to ensure fairness across the organization.

This foundational work in cultural alignment provided the necessary environment for the network’s outstanding financial results in the subsequent years. OMG India is achieving growth rates in excess of 20% plus, having secured 800 plus crores of additional business in a single year. Kartik stresses that the network deliberately prioritizes healthy and sustainable growth, valuing consistency over a long period to unlock tremendous value for both the agency and its clients.

The Shift to Business-Oriented Partnerships

The conversation underscores the dramatic transformation in client expectations. Clients are increasingly demanding integrated services and simplicity, viewing the management of multiple specialized agencies as too complex.

Crucially, modern agencies must understand broader business objectives rather than just focusing on media planning. Since media budgets form one of the largest components of the marketing pie, discussions frequently elevate to board members or investors, who expect agencies to provide insights that unlock future growth, often looking three to five years forward. Furthermore, clients are actively seeking practical use cases of artificial intelligence (AI) to shape effective marketing strategies.

Technology, Measurement, and the Omni Platform

Addressing the industry’s critical challenges, Kartik outlines OMG India’s proactive measures against ad fraud, which includes working with detection companies, estimating fraud levels, and avoiding specific untested environments like certain affiliates and aggregators in favour of high-quality, premium inventory.

He clarifies that media measurement is a global problem with two vital parts: understanding the output (the value of reach and frequency) and the effectiveness (the impact on business, or outcome).

Central to the agency’s strategy is its proprietary marketing platform, Omni, which Forrester has rated as the number one platform globally for three consecutive years. Kartik details that Omni uses sophisticated data science, having ingested over 1,800 econometric models tailored for the Indian market. These models help calculate marginal ROI and determine optimal client budgets, providing a predictive capability that estimates business outcomes with an accuracy ranging from 92% to 95%.

Creative Effectiveness and Media Landscape Insights

Kartik provides perspective on optimizing ad spend across platforms. He asserts that linear television remains a vital tool for building memory structures, impacting mass market products like FMCG, and serving consumers who are currently “out of market”. He confirms that Connected TV (CTV) holds great potential for marketers targeting affluent demographics, estimating its current reach at 40 to 50 million households in India.

He emphasizes the critical role of creative effectiveness, citing published studies that rank creativity as the number two factor for brand success after brand size. OMG uses third-party tools based on eye-tracking to assess the attention factor of a creative, providing suggestions for edits. This approach leads to the use of attention-adjusted reach as a key terminology for media optimization, ensuring advertising investment is maximized on the most engaging content.

Guidance for Aspiring Professionals

Concluding the insightful session, Kartik shares three important pieces of advice for aspiring professionals entering the advertising and media field. These tips focus on essential common sense, securing foundational knowledge, and the necessary patience required to succeed in a career he describes as a “mega test match” demanding years of investment and continuous learning.

The full conversation provides indispensable insights into steering a high-growth network, adapting to complex client mandates, and leveraging sophisticated platforms like Omni to guarantee superior return on business objectives.

To know about the specific strategies driving exponential growth, the crucial shifts demanded in client relationships, and the three pieces of advice that underscore professional success, we invite you to watch (on YouTube) or listen (on top podcast directories) to Kartik Sharma, CEO of Omnicom Media Group India, for a definitive roadmap to leadership and innovation in future-ready marketing.
