In this episode of VideoBrief, Kapil Thirani, Vice President at Shopsy (Flipkart), discusses building a marketplace with trust at its core, empowering small businesses through incubation and insights, and creating a consumer-centric experience. He also shares how Shopsy differentiates itself for hyper-value consumers, highlights the importance of supply chain efficiency, explores the role of content and algorithms in discovery, and outlines strategies for festive seasons and Tier 2 consumer engagement.
When asked about the journey of Shopsy Flipkart, Kapil Thirani calls it “nothing short of a dream.” He explains, “If you just think about it, you don’t get this opportunity very often to build a complete marketplace. I’m really grateful to everyone in this journey. If I think about Shopsy standalone, this is probably positioned to be the best-placed hyper-value platform in the country.”
From a supply perspective, Thirani emphasizes the importance of the seller ecosystem. “We have the entire seller ecosystem who wants to come together and sell products that are conveniently available for everyone. On the consumer side, there are almost 450 million people who are already entrenched in Indian e-commerce, but another 800 million have access to the internet and are still not doing e-commerce. It’s the right time to make something tailor-made for this audience who are online but not in commerce yet. They face multiple problems, like trust issues—they want assurance that they get what they see, that the product is of good quality, and that it arrives safely. Trust is a core pillar, and we aim to bridge this gap.”
Thirani highlights how Shopsy differentiates itself from traditional e-commerce platforms: “Traditional e-commerce markets are indexed toward providing for all consumer segments. We wanted to make something specifically for hyper-value consumers. High-affluent users are aware of trends and designs, but this consumer segment is not so aware—they look for inspiration in multiple places. So we focus on a browsing experience to offer more inspiration.”
Supply chain efficiency also remains critical. Thirani elaborates, “We aim to provide products to sellers at the lowest cost of doing business. With e-cart and the group’s capabilities, we ensure trustworthy service to consumers and low costs for sellers, creating a winning proposition. At the core, we enable sellers with low-cost operations, win consumers on trust, give them what they want, and ensure discovery mechanisms are tuned to their needs. Supply chain supports trust and ensures delivery with care. That is the entire flywheel journey.”
Empowering Small Businesses Through Incubation and Insights
Shopsy’s impact extends significantly to small businesses. Thirani shares, “There’s a problem of democratization. We need to ensure that all sellers feel equal. One big focus is discovery and selection, and the other is support when a seller joins the platform. We have an incubation program for new sellers that lasts two months. Sellers can get overwhelmed when they start—how to create and price products, manage services, decide between warehouses or self-fulfillment, handle advertising, returns, and P&L. Our program handholds sellers through these challenges. Each module explains processes in detail, helping sellers understand their P&L.”
The platform provides a wealth of data and tools to optimize offerings. “We’ve launched features like settlement-based pricing, easy reconciliation, and a large insights platform. For example, if a seller is selling t-shirts, they can see what consumers are looking for—trending styles, popular price points, colors, sleeve types, and materials—so they can align offerings with demand. On pricing, sellers see common products in their category and what competitors charge, helping them set optimal prices,” he explains.
Thirani also highlights how Shopsy helps sellers understand market response. “We offer Product Listing Ads (PLA). Flipkart has over 90 million products, and PLA allows sellers to advertise to appear higher in search rankings. This helps test products in the market and gain quick consumer feedback. Fulfillment is equally important: we ensure orders are packed, handed to e-cart representatives, and delivered safely to consumers.”
Creating a Consumer-Centric Experience
On the consumer side, content is at the heart of Shopsy’s strategy. Thirani points out, “Content drives discovery, inspiration, and demand. We work with content creators to showcase unique products and trends, ensuring consumers are aware of new discoveries.”
Algorithms play a critical role in product discovery. “The ranking algorithm determines which products appear first, especially when consumers search generically, like for ‘sarees,’ where millions of results exist. Algorithms prioritize trending products and those with high engagement,” he says.
Shopsy also provides an “endless aisle” feed where consumers can browse offerings without specific searches, catering to casual window shoppers. Thirani notes, “We focus on reducing cost of doing business, optimizing return policies, RTO, quality fulfillment, and discovery algorithms, supported by the creator economy. The seller-side tools simplify operations for new sellers and improve consumer navigation.”
Focus on Categories and Consumer Aspirations
Thirani emphasizes category-wise focus: “We ensure all categories are well represented. Fashion is our largest category, followed by general merchandising and home. Home category engagement is growing, driven by videos on decoration and festive finds. Tier 2 and 3 consumers have aspirations but limited offline selection, so they explore new trends and products online.”
He elaborates on product performance: “Across categories, women’s ethnic wear, dresses, shorts, t-shirts, home furnishing, and home décor perform well. Electronics like TWS (true wireless sets) also see good traction. Household items like choppers are all-time favorites.”
Festive Season and Shopper Response
Discussing festive campaigns, Thirani says, “Our season starts early, usually before Independence Day, and continues through Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali, and peaks during Christmas and year-end. During these events, we create moments for consumers to engage with the platform. Hyper-value consumers look for better use of money, and Shopsy starts the festive season early. Grand Shopsy runs from early to mid-September, offering over one crore products under ₹149, catering to aspirational buyers.”
The Big Billion Days is another key property. “Big Billion Days is a massive property for Indian e-commerce, now recognized by consumers as a single event irrespective of the platform or category. Night-of-shopping interest is very high.”
Government interventions like GST rate cuts have amplified these sales. Thirani explains, “We coordinated with sellers and the tech team to ensure all listings reflected updated GST rates from the first day of the event—over 90 million listings—benefiting consumers with savings during this ‘double bonanza.’”
Marketing Strategy and Tier 2 Focus
On marketing, Thirani observes, “Marketing today must be omnichannel. We ensure presence with content creators, digital platforms, TV, billboards—almost everywhere. Marketing plays a key role in visibility, but deeper details are handled by the marketing team. Overall, tier 2 cities remain the core pillar for consumerism. Our strategies enable access to products traditionally unavailable offline, amplified by tech-driven consumer insights.”
Shopsy Flipkart is not just a marketplace; it is a carefully designed ecosystem that balances seller empowerment, consumer trust, and discovery. Kapil Thirani encapsulates the ethos perfectly: “Tier 2 remains a guiding pillar, driving discovery and enabling access to products that were previously out of reach.” As India’s e-commerce landscape evolves, Shopsy Flipkart stands out as a platform that blends technology, trust, and inclusivity to redefine hyper-value shopping.
