NDTV charts AI-led growth strategy, expands focus on digital, hyperlocal and news-plus ventures

NDTV is positioning itself for its next phase of growth with a stronger focus on digital platforms, artificial intelligence, hyperlocal content and brand extensions beyond traditional broadcasting, according to remarks shared by Rahul Kanwal, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of NDTV following the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

In a LinkedIn post after the AGM, Kanwal said the broadcaster had outlined plans to build “a new NDTV for a new India”, highlighting editorial investments, financial growth and new business initiatives aimed at expanding the network’s reach and relevance across platforms.

The company reported revenue of Rs 528.29 crore for the year, representing growth of 13.6% over the previous year. Kanwal said the successful rights issue had strengthened the company’s balance sheet and provided greater strategic flexibility for future growth.

Reviewing the performance of the network’s news brands, Kanwal said NDTV 24×7 enhanced its focus on debates, analysis and contextual storytelling, while NDTV India strengthened its connection with audiences through Hindi journalism and on-ground reporting. NDTV Profit, he added, continued to build its presence in business journalism.

Kanwal also highlighted the international ambitions of NDTV World, describing it as a platform intended to “take India to the world and bring the world to India”. He cited the NDTV World Summit as a key initiative that brought together global leaders and experts to discuss geopolitics, technology, diplomacy, climate, innovation and international cooperation.

Digital growth remains a central pillar of the company’s strategy. According to Kanwal, NDTV’s digital ecosystem now includes more than 45 million lifetime YouTube subscribers, over 102 million social media followers and more than 40 billion video views. He described digital as a growth engine and distribution network rather than merely an extension of the company’s core business.

Artificial intelligence is expected to play a significant role in the broadcaster’s future operations. Kanwal said NDTV aims to become an AI-led media company by deploying AI across research, workflows, language capabilities, audience insights and archive discovery, while maintaining human editorial oversight and decision-making.

The company also sees opportunities in hyperlocal journalism, with Kanwal noting that future growth will increasingly be shaped by developments in emerging cities, local businesses, educational institutions, healthcare systems and community networks.

Beyond news, NDTV is expanding into what Kanwal described as “news-plus” opportunities. Initiatives such as the NDTV Art Awards, NDTV Food Awards, Ind.AI Summit and NDTV ProAm are being developed as intellectual properties designed to build communities, strengthen partnerships and extend the NDTV brand beyond broadcasting.

Kanwal said the company is also focusing on the rapidly growing Connected TV segment and on leveraging the NDTV brand in adjacent categories. Recent initiatives include NDTV Launchpad, a learning and skilling platform; NDTV Lifeline, a health-focused platform building on the legacy of Doctor NDTV; NDTV Datafy, a data journalism initiative; and NDTV Automate, marking the company’s return to the automotive content space.

“NDTV is moving forward with conviction and purpose,” Kanwal said, describing the network as being rooted in trust, powered by innovation and prepared for its next phase of growth.
