March 2026 food trends: Swiggy reports peak orders during Navratri, Eid and IPL weekend

Swiggy observed a 25% growth in orders during Navratri 2026 compared to the previous year and a spike in biryani orders on Eid.

Swiggy announces consumer trends for March 2026, a month featuring festivals including Holi, Navratri, and Eid. During Navratri (March 19-27, 2026), Swiggy observed a 25% growth in orders as compared to Navratri in April 2025. Orders peaked on March 22, 2026, with 4,800 orders placed at 8:06 pm.

Amongst the popular fasting dishes, Sabudana Khichdi was the favorite during Navratri, with close to 222 orders being placed every hour across India. This was followed by Sabudana Vada (156 orders per hour) and the traditional Vrat Thali (nearly 120 orders placed an hour). The highest volume of Navratri orders amongst metros was from Bengaluru, Delhi, and Gurgaon. In emerging markets, cities like Bareilly, Bhopal, and Dehradun led the demand for festive meals. A customer in Delhi spent INR 11,980 on a Navratri feast of 10 Navratri Special Vrat Thalis, 10 Special Veg Thalis, and 20 glasses of Masala Chaas.

On Eid al-Fitr (March 21, 2026), Biryani was the star of the festivities, with an average of over 200 orders placed every minute across the country. Alongside this, desserts like Choco Lava Cake and Gulab Jamun were in demand, with an average of 11 orders of Gulab Jamun placed per minute across India. One customer from Noida placed an order worth INR 38,165. A customer in Mumbai ordered 3 large packs of Mutton Biryani for INR 15,866 to serve 15 people.

City-wise consumption trends on Eid showed high order volumes in hubs like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Delhi. Cities like Thiruvananthapuram, Surat, and Mangaluru saw activity amongst emerging cities, while Shillong, Agartala, and Dibrugarh led in smaller markets.

During the IPL 2026 launch weekend, there was a 31% growth in overall Swiggy Dineout bookings as compared to the first day of the last season (22 March 2025). The opening night (March 28, 2026) saw over 30% spike in bookings as compared to the previous Saturday (March 21, 2026) in restaurants offering live sports screenings. Bookings for the 7 PM slot, when the match began, increased by 22.4% in the same period.

Bengaluru, hosting the opening match on March 28, 2026, saw city bookings surge by over 21% as compared to the previous Saturday (March 21, 2026), and the city saved over INR 96 lakhs through Swiggy Dineout. The following day, Mumbai saved more than INR 63 lakhs in one day.

A single customer in Bengaluru spent INR 1,18,973 for the opening night (March 28, 2026). Bookings for groups of five or more spiked by 24.8% as compared to last Saturday (March 21, 2026), with the largest booking for a group of 30 in Bengaluru. Casual dining restaurants saw the highest number of bookings over the inaugural weekend (March 28-29, 2026), while pubs, bars, and lounges witnessed the maximum growth compared to the previous weekend.

During the Holi period (28 Feb to 8 March, 2026), Swiggy delivered over 5,764 Holi-specials across 1,381 long-distance trains.
