WhatsApp was India’s #1 social networking app in 2020: App Annie State of Mobile 2021

App Annie the leading global provider of mobile data and analytics in its ‘The State of Mobile 2021‘ report said that Telegram was India’s top breakout social networking app followed by WhatsApp messenger, Instagram, MX TakaTak, and Moj. The top app 5 rankings by App Annie take into consideration only those apps whose primary purpose is communication, whether one-to-one or one-to-many.

WhatsApp Messenger

WhatsApp leads Indian social networking apps with 21. 3 average hours spent by users per month during 2020. WhatsApp average hour spent has increased by 4.1 average hours during 2020.

Facebook

In 2019 users spent an average of 15 hours per month on Facebook. In 2020 the average amount of hours spent per month increased from 15 to 17.1 hrs.

Instagram

Average monthly time spent by Instagram users on the app also increased marginally from 8.8 hours in 2019 to 9.8 hours in 2020.

Truecaller

The caller-identification, call-blocking application’s monthly usage in hours was 3.1 in 2019 which increased to an average of 4.6 in 2021.

TikTok

Although the government banned TikTok in 2020, during the first six months that the app was up and running the app boasted an average of 10.6 hours per month in 2020 which increased from 8.2 hours in 2019.

On a global level, TikTok outpaces top social apps in hours spent by users. TikTok ranked in the top 5 by time spent, and its average monthly time spent per user grew faster than nearly every other app analyzed, including 70% in the US and 80% in the UK — surpassing Facebook.

Additionally, the report says, that overall time spent indicates the reach and depth of engagement – among the top social networking apps the average time spent per user increased for nearly every app in every market.
