The thriller-drama-action genre has always been one of India’s most popular, and for its fifth Prime Original Series offering from India, Amazon Prime Video is launching Mirzapur, an action drama which is set in the heartland of India and revolves around drugs, guns and the politics of power in a land where might is right.
By selecting Excel Media & Entertainment — a subsidiary of Excel Entertainment, one of the leading production houses of Bollywood widely known for acclaimed films like Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya, Rock On, Dil Dhadakne Do and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara — to produce Mirzapur, Amazon Prime Video has kept its focus on selecting content producers of top pedigree.
The series brings together the trio of Ritesh Sidhwani, Karan Anshuman and Farhan Akhtar, creators of Prime Original Series Inside Edge that recently earned an International Emmy nomination for Best Drama Series (the first-of-its’s-kind for a video-on-demand series originating from India).
Mirzapur – storyline
Mirzapur is about the journey of two brothers lured by the idea of power, only to get consumed by it. It is a high-octane portrayal of India’s heartland and youth in a world replete with drugs, guns, and lawlessness, where caste, power, egos and tempers intersect and violence is the only way of life.
It’s a world of trigger-happy gangsters with sharp minds and dry humour, where loyalties change in a flash and cold cash rules. Violence is an everyday occurrence where complete and utter dominance is the goal. Politicians, cops, lawyers and gun lords are involved in a complex web of relationships and rivalries.
Akhandanand Tripathi, also known as Kaleen Bhaiya, is a millionaire carpet exporter and the ‘bahubali’ (strongman) of the city of Mirzapur, which lies in the lawless belt of Purvanchal (Eastern Uttar Pradesh). Mirzapur is the most coveted seat of power in the region. The ruthless Tripathis have been the de-facto rulers of Mirzapur since Satyananda Tripathi, Akhandanand’s father, took the reins of the city from the previous bahubali.
Munna Tripathi, Akhandanand’s son, is an unworthy heir to this empire built on an illegal gun trade and drug smuggling. Munna, very much like the rest of his clan, is power-hungry and will not stop at anything to inherit his father’s legacy.
Guddu and Bablu Pandit are the sons of the city’s only righteous and upstanding lawyer, Ramakant Pandit. Guddu and Bablu aspire for a better life that breaks the monotony and struggle of middle-class living, while Ramakant crusades to take on the might of the Tripathis.
An unrelated incident, involving Munna at a wedding procession, ignites a series of events entangling the lives of the Tripathis and the Pandits. This sets off a game of ambition, power, loyalty and greed, eventually threatening the control of the Tripathis on Mirzapur.
With heart-pounding action, violence at an operatic scale, gangsters with sharp minds and dry humor, Mirzapur is a hinterland story that is as raw as it gets.
The 9-episode series stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Vikrant Massey, Divyendu Sharma, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Rasika Dugal, Harshita Gaur and Amit Sial, and has been created by Karan Anshuman & Puneet Krishna and directed by Gurmmeet Singh.
Ritesh Sidhwani, Excel Media & Entertainment, said, “We are thrilled to collaborate with Amazon Prime Video to present a genre-defining, bold and powerful story like Mirzapur. A show of this caliber with high production value and scale takes it to the next level of cinematic experience. We are taking a story set in the heartland of India to a global audience and are excited to see how viewers respond to it.”
Karan Anshuman, Creator, said, “Mirzapur is the perfect storm. The creative freedom Amazon Prime Video allows, Excel’s adroit production experience, an ensemble cast that takes an already fantastic script and owns it….this is a fine time for filmmakers and I’m looking forward to new collaborations.”
Farhan Akhtar, Excel Media & Entertainment, said, “We are excited to collaborate again with Amazon Prime Video for the next Prime Original Series, Mirzapur. The success of Inside Edge reaffirms our faith in digital streaming in India, proving that these are indeed exciting times for storytellers, artists, writers and filmmakers. Mirzapur is a story not meant for the faint hearted and it will make people think about the show for days after watching it.”
Vijay Subramaniam, Director & Head, Content, Amazon Prime Video India, said, “With Mirzapur, we reiterate our commitment to bring new, ground breaking shows to Indian and global audiences with high caliber production values and exceptional content creators and talent. More importantly, we remain committed to taking stories from India that are local in narrative yet epic in scale to a global stage. If the global launches of Inside Edge, Breathe, etc. have taught us anything, it is that high quality Indian content has found resonance with audiences around the world and there is a growing appetite for the same”.
Smartly scheduled to launch just before the weekend on a Friday, Season One of the 9-episode series should resonate with viewers and push the envelope for Amazon Prime Video in India. 9 episodes, three days. If Episode 1 catches on, as it promises to do, the 9 episodes of Mirzapur should run out on the viewers before the weekend does.
